Shocking Air Pollution

Hi at all,
here is a short clip which I found at youtube. It is about air pollution all over the world. I want to post it here on our blog because it has shocked me. When I saw it for the first time it makes me feel sad and frightened. It is the interplay of pictures, music and news which is threatening. And the worst thing is, a few pictures are everyday pictures. But see for yourself.

  1. I think this is a good example of how many pictures we see about pollution every day and how we slowly get used to it.

They show up so frequently, at least some of them, that the original impact it had on me got lost a little bit. Of course these pictures are still very striking and horrifying in a sense.

  2. Yes, they are. With respect to the US, too, some of the statistics are unconscionable. That's part of the power of the "toxic rhetoric" of Svenja's post, right? It motivates people to act. You're horrified when you see the "betrayed Edens" and the gothicized squalor of those cities in China. Still, it's rhetoric, so we must remain critically attuned to it. Next step is to do some research into OXYCORP, the company who commissioned the video. Just as Ginger Strand does with the Crying Indian, do some more work on other motivations. That evidence is being marshalled for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which, I bet, is economic.
